Where in the World is Matt Lee?
Iconic IT’s Director of Technology, Matt Lee, talks about risk management and announces launch of ICONIC HAX!
Welcome back friends! March was an absolutely crazy month!
The globe had another massive security exposure that I believe may have deeper implications than that of the earlier Solar Winds Supply chain breach in December. Those still anchored to legacy exchange had to rapidly patch a zero-day vulnerability that was actively being exploited by many actors. Our team and clients partnered together and were impressive in how quickly they were able to get ahold of the situation, close the gap, and mitigate risk quickly! I am proud of each and every person involved in that endeavor. We have shared a lot of valuable telemetry with the appropriate parties to do our part in stopping these threats!
That said, this brings me to the topic of today, RISK. Not the board game but the concept of trying to understand the financial, operational, and down-right human emotional implications of any particular action. Business owners do this consciously or subconsciously extremely well every single day. At least, for the things they have chosen to say are in their level of understanding. A great example is most business owners do not allow campfires in their office buildings. 1. They don’t like being burned alive, loss of property, or many other nefarious things that could occur, and 2. They understand that each of those risks is real and has implications. Some are loss of life and limb, some simply financial, and even others insured for. This is an example of a healthy risk understanding and acceptance as well as taking actions that support that posture.
Rather than trying to write on each one this month, here is some great content I was humbly allowed to help produce and present at this month:
6. Pax8 – Began an ongoing series of presenting to their internal teams about what we do and how we serve our clients #BetterTogether. We had great audience participation from the East and West Coast teams. (Now I will say, West coast was way more engaged than East coast!!)
7. Pax8 – M365 Bootcamp – Two days of epic discussion with over 300 MSPs who had almost 500 questions from the MSPs. I was in awe of the engagement by fellow MSPs trying to help serve the modern client.
8. Microsoft MSP Virtual Site visit – Microsoft is absolutely listening to what MSPs need. We spent time with our executives and Microsoft to discuss what MSPs do to serve their clients and how Microsoft can make it more secure and faster, more efficient for us!
9. Gradient MSP PAC meeting – I was invited to participate in the Gradient MSP PAC meeting to keep tabs on what Colin Knox is up to next in his mission to empower MSPs
Each of these presentations could easily be brought back to the conversation of risk and the management thereof. One point I want each business owner to ponder is this. I know too many CEOs/Business Owners that can tell you the most detailed and intricate part of their day-to-day operations. Minutia like the dump truck schedule or the correct hydraulic pressures for dump truck number 7, but when it comes to technology and data security, they tell everyone “that’s the smart folks’ job”. Data/Cybersecurity and privacy are a collaborative team sport. We should be the trusted advisors much like you engage your CPA or Doctor. And after collaboration and advise, comes the prescription and it equally should be followed. Risk is real but it doesn’t have to be scary, just lean in.
I also am proud to announce that in March we officially launched ICONIC HAX! Our very own hacking club where we get together and learn the ways we are able to be attacked by doing it ourselves in a controlled way, so we can more adequately defend our constituencies. We plan on having guest speakers, toys from partners and companies interested in giving back to the cybersecurity education endeavors in our global MSP community. Congratulations to Mark Jordan for his brainchild getting legs this month!
I cannot wait to see you all in person as this world continues to open up! Please be safe and investigate/mitigate one risk between now and next time we talk!
